AVID- Advancement Via Individual Determination
Core Classes
AVID Core classes support students to become tertiary and career ready by developing the skills, mindset, and habits needed for success beyond school.
AVID students commit to working towards future pathways by demonstrating Respect, Responsibility, and my Personal Best in all aspects of learning.
They commit to working towards tertiary and career readiness by developing:
Student Agency - They believe in themselves and take responsibility for their learning. They build positive relationships, persist through challenges, and use my academic, social, emotional, and professional skills to reach their potential.
They are active learners and come prepared, completing assigned work, taking focused notes, and participating fully in all learning activities.
They treat teachers and peers with respect, and contribute to a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
They build relational capacity through trust, collaboration, and authenticity.
Rigorous Academic Preparedness - They work towards successfully completing challenging tertiary and career preparatory learning experiences.
They consistently work to their personal best, demonstrating responsibility for their learning, behaviour, attendance, and organisation.
They understand that they are expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress and citizenship, and they will engage in support processes when needed.
They attend AVID tutorials prepared, with TRF completed, their AVID binder organised, and focused notes ready.
They use critical thinking, inquiry, and collaboration to deepen their understanding and improve their performance across all subjects.
Opportunity Knowledge - I will explore future opportunities, set meaningful goals, and make responsible choices that support my long-term aspirations.
They will actively participate in university workshops, excursions, and enrichment opportunities.
They will seek guidance, ask questions, and reflect on their progress as they plan for their future.
The development of these skills is rooted in belief in self. If students believe they are capable, there is a foundational confidence to learn and a resiliency to overcome setbacks.
Parent Involvement
Partnering with the AVID Core teacher and school through respectful, ongoing communication and attendance at parent and caregiver meetings and information sessions.
Monitoring their child’s academic progress, wellbeing, organisation, and engagement to ensure they are working towards meeting course requirements and maintaining eligibility for future tertiary, training, and career pathways.
Encouraging their child to take responsibility for their learning by attempting challenging subjects, preparing for tertiary preparation or entrance opportunities, and seeking support when needed.
Supporting participation in extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and enrichment programs that build confidence, skills, and character.
Reinforcing high expectations for effort, behaviour, and perseverance, and celebrating growth and achievement.
Illuminate Challenge
The illuminate Challenge is a week-long, immersive entrepreneurship and innovation program for Australian high school students. Run by illuminate Education Australia, it empowers students to solve real-world community problems using design thinking, business skills, and teamwork, often culminating in a pitch competition. This is run on the Central Coast in partnership with University of Newcastle and the Central Coast Secondary Principals Council.
Extension Opportunities
AVID students are offered a range of extension opportunities and excursions to explore their passions and thirst for knowledge. Students develop essential skills to design their own futures, critical thinking , collaboration, reading, writing and relationship building.
AVID Tutoring
AVID tutors facilitate small-group, inquiry-based sessions (tutorials) where they use the Socratic method to guide students to their own answers, rather than providing direct answers, fostering independent, critical thinking skills.
Uni-steps
UNI STEPS is a portfolio of learning experience and engagements for local school aged students to engage with the University, to include but not limited to a mix of on campus/ community learning/ online learning/in school/industry experiences. The University is engaging with students at pivotal decision times in their learning journey.
Relational Capacity
Relational Capacity is the connection among individuals that develops over time when interactions are built on respect, trust, and authenticity. When educators connect with students and colleagues, and students connect with peers, learning and confidence are activated among all on a campus. All three connections are instrumental in helping students grow to see their capabilities and find their own way.
