Dance

Northlakes High School has an extensive Dance program, offering a range of ensembles and performance groups who perform publicly throughout the year. Each year, students have successfully auditioned and performed at regional and state events representing Northlakes High School with pride. Our teachers are industry professionals, who have extensive experience in the Dance and Performing Arts field and a passion for sharing this knowledge with the students within these Dance programs.

Northlakes High School Dance Company

Northlakes High School has a specialist Dance program designed to focus on developing gifted and talented dance students within the performance arts. The practical based course is designed to challenge students across a variety of styles and performance arenas. Classes are taught in a fully equipped dance studio on the school grounds. The air-conditioned state of the art dance studio boasts a 7m x 9m sprung timber floor, full length mirrors across 2 sides of the studio and timber barres. The surround sound audio system operates through the latest technology and students have access to the mirrored change room that is inside the studio to store their dance uniforms and get changed prior to class.

Students who are a part of the dance program develop their dance technique through a practical course to prepare for auditions and perform at various events both regionally and on a state level. Through the Dance Company program students in Years 7 and 8 will begin to learn the basics of dance technique and performance quality through various styles of dance. They will then continue this study through the Year 9 and 10 Elective courses that will be compulsory for those students who had auditioned to be a part of the company and recommended to any other students across the school that have an interest in Dance. It is then highly encouraged that students continue these studies for their preliminary and HSC years, if they feel they are excelling and wish to continue their passion for dance as an artform.

Through active engagement in the Dance Company students will enhance their dance technique and performance skills, develop teamwork, leadership, problem solving and organisational skills, which can be transferred across a range of contexts.

How do you join the company?

The Northlakes High School Dance Company is available to all students who wish to undertake specialist study in Dance. Auditions will be held annually for all students. Students undertake intensive tutoring in our professionally equipped studio whilst completing their comprehensive studies. In 2022 Northlakes will have 2 Dance Companies with the anticipation that this will continue to grow over the years to come. These 2 companies are as follows:

Stage 4 Company:

The Stage 4 performance group is open for any students in Years 7 and 8. Auditions will be held early in Term 1. Rehearsals are once a week in the NHS dance studio to prepare for various state, regional and community events throughout the year.

Stage 5 & 6 Company:

Only students that have elected either 200hr dance, preliminary dance or HSC dance are eligible to audition for the Stage 5 & 6 Company. This group rehearses once a week in the NHS dance studio to prepare for various state, regional and community events throughout the year.

Can I study dance at Northlakes if I am not in the Dance Company?

Yes! Below is how each year group can study dance without being a part of the program.

Year 7 and 8: Our senior students run a lunch time dance program that any students in Year 7 & 8 can be a part of. This group prepares performances for regional auditions as well as school performances.

Year 9 and 10: A 200 hr dance elective course and 100 hr dance elective course is offered to all students at Northlakes High School. It can be chosen as their X or Y subject during the subject selection process in Year 8.

Year 11 and 12: The HSC dance course is open to all Year 11 and 12 students to study as an ATAR course. Dance is a 2 unit subject which can be chosen by students during the subject selection process in Year 10.

Primary links dance program: In conjunction with Northlakes Public School, Budgewoi Public school and Bluehaven Public School, Dance company students will have opportunities to coach and mentor younger students at various times during the year.
