Adaptive Learning Centre

The Adaptive Learning Centre at Northlakes High School has 5 classes that cater for students with a diverse range of needs.

The Adaptive Learning Centre (ALC) is an integral part of our school. Our aim is to provide an excellent educational experience, whilst meeting each student’s individual social, health and academic needs. We have five classes with each class consisting of between seven and eighteen students, a main classroom teacher, and a School Learning Support Officer.

The ALC faculty works in partnership with mainstream teachers, parents, carers, and external organisations to develop wholistic and collaborative Individual Education Plans (IEP'S) for our students. Our Life Skills subjects provide students with the opportunity to focus on developing the skills and knowledge to be an inclusive and valuable member of the whole school community.

Curriculum

Our aim for all our student’s is to develop independence and be ready for life beyond school. All students follow a program based on the Life Skills syllabus. Through collaboration with all parties, we develop individual goals that meet the student's needs.

Our curriculum follows a similar sequence of learning to the mainstream classes, with our students participating in concrete and hands on activities to solidify their learning. Our programs have a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, ensuring all programs have reading, writing, talking and listening, and functional numeracy embedded within them. These programs are all differentiated for each of our learners.

Further opportunities are offered such as Community Access, school excursions, work experience and camps, allowing students to build upon their numeracy and literacy skills as well as their social, and independence skills. The ALC provides many well-rounded opportunities both in and out of the classroom with highly specialised educators in a nurturing, and inclusive environment.
