Support Unit

The support unit at Northlakes High School has 6 classes that caters for students with intellectual, physical and emotional disabilities.

The support unit is an integral part of our school. Our aim is to provide an excellent educational experience, whilst meeting each students individual needs within the classroom. Each class has between seven and eighteen students and a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO). Each class has a main classroom teacher as well as our RFF teacher who teaches all classes. We have two IO classes, an MC class, an IM class and two combined ED classes.

All students have an Individual Education Program. This program focuses on meeting the individual child's needs: therefore building on success. These programs have a heavy focus on literacy and numeracy covering reading, writing, talking and listening. Students follow a similar sequence of learning to the mainstream classes and participate in concrete and hands on activities to solidify their learning. We have held Paper Plane and Volcano Competitions in Science and excursions to Fort Scratchley for our World Wars study in HSIW. All classes also participate in Community Access. Classes access their local community via public transport to gain and practice travel training and life skills within a comfortable environment.
