Northlakes High School English Faculty
English is the study of the use of the English language. At Northlakes High School we explore the ways in which individuals communicate in everyday situations and through everyday texts. Students study texts that are spoken, written and visual, including plays, poetry, short stories, novels, multimedia sites and films.
English at Northlakes High School aims to help students use, understand, appreciate, reflect on and enjoy the English langage and the ways that we communicate with one another. We aim to foster an appreciation of the power, value and art of the English language for communication, knowledge and pleasure. We encourage our students to develop an understanding of their own identity, was well as the human experience across time, place, culture and context.
English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

We at Northlakes High School would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land on which we work, learn, and grow, the Darkinjung and Awaba peoples. This is the shared lands of the people of the mountains and the people of the sea. We recognise the continued connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to the land and support future generations in maintaining this connection to their land and culture. We also pay respects to the Elders for they are our leaders, our story and knowledge sharers.
